Pour warm milk into a medium bowl, or keep it in your liquid measuring cup, then sprinkle the yeast on top along with ½ teaspoon of sugar. However, if the milk is too hot, you can easily let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes to cool down. You don't want the milk to be too hot or too cold, it should be warm enough for you to comfortably keep your finger in. I just microwaved my milk in 30 second intervals and stuck a clean finger in it as a test.
